As a site developer I use WordPress for many of my own websites and recommend it for those out there that want a professional site that is easy to manage. If you are unfamiliar with Content Management Systems then WordPress is a great CMS to start off with. It allows easy to use posts and static pages as well as rich content like images and video. It is a highly customizable option that is easy to install on your own hosting provider and in face comes as an auto-install with hosting packages that include Fantastico.
Installing:
As I have mentioned above, installing can be as simple as going into Fantastico on your hosting package and hitting the auto-install. Even if you do not have this on your hosting package you only have to upload the free software, unpack and then setup a database (only one required). For the purposes of this instructional article I will not go into too much detail as you can check out the official install guides at wordpress.org as well as instructional videos. Also, if you are not comfortable with the technical side of your site then you can always contact Double Foot Productions and we can offer a complete setup service.
Using Your WordPress Install:
After your installation is complete you will be logging into your WordPress site for the first time. Here I will go into some basic setups of the CMS. The main things you need to know are as follows:
Posts:
Are used to share information and these are your regular ‘blog’ posts or site updates.
Pages:
These are the ‘static’ (rarely changed) parts of your site. Made the same as a post, but under the assumption that these pages are more information based i.e an ‘about me’ page.
Categories:
These are the generalised sections of your website. You can see the different categories I have placed on this site and these will be used to organise your posts.
Once you have these figured out you are technically ready to start adding content to your site. It is best to set up all of your categories first and then play around with some posts and pages so you get the hang of it. This is what I do with my own site development and Double Foot Productions is always willing to help with that initial site setup. WordPress is designed in a way tat once it is setup it is a simple matter of logging in and ‘posting’ new content.
Congratulations, you’re almost a blogger!
Well, the hard work is done and the ‘shell’ of your site is almost complete. The next step is the cosmetics of the site. You will have to have a site logo and also choose from the many different themes available to you. I will post about this as a separate issue as there are many template sites, some good, many bad
